The family of a two-day old baby boy in Iloilo province have expressed weariness on the sudden death of their tenth child they believe was killed by an “aswang”.
The father, who did not wish to be identified, said the baby boy was born Monday and died for unknown reasons a day after.
He said they were alarmed since they have been hearing indescribable sounds the night the baby died.
The family’s four-year old kid also said that she has seen the “aswang” on top of her sibling.
When the family checked the dead body of the child the next day, they found several marks on the baby boy. Blood clots on his legs and ears were also found.

This strengthened their belief that a certain old lady dubbed to be “aswang” was the culprit.
Because of this, neighbors reportedly were making sure to keep an eye on their children especially when evening comes. A barangay tanod even prepared a stingray’s tail, believed to protect them and to catch the “aswang” when it returns.
Meanwhile, neonatologist Dra. Leiza Gonzaga-Sahi said this might be another case of a neonatal death. She said the first twenty four hours of a baby’s life is very critical.
She said the baby might not have adjusted right away to his environment. Infection or probable hereditary characteristics might also be few of the many scientific explanations to be considered since this is already the fourth death of a new-born baby in the family.
Sahi also suggested that the baby undergo an autopsy to have deeper explanation on his sudden death.
The family however would not consider it and already plans to bury the child.
The "aswang" is a creature of Filipino folklore and a product of the imagination in the olden days but for some believers, it is quite real.
Filipino superstitious beliefs say that the usual targets of the “aswang” are pregnant women and young children. It is believed to make its attacks on or before midnight.
