Fear
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear.
H.P. Lovecraft

“I am scared,” he tells himself. He needs to pee and the pain in his abdomen starts to become unbearable. But, he won’t dare get out of his bed. He hears the weird noises and grunts of the bogeymen that live inside his closet and the symphony of demons dying to get inside his room to tear his puny bones and eat him: the honking horns of the passing goblins, the ticking of gnomes and the rumbling noises of speeding trolls. All of these fill his mind with horrendous images. From time to time, strange lights appear from the window, which he still sees though his whole body is covered by a blanket.
The boy remembers the stories his granny, mummy, daddy, and everyone told him about the monsters that inhabit the bamboo trees in the backyard, who eat the unfortunate and stubborn children who makes the grave mistake of wandering there. The black dwarves who eat noisy children, the tikbalangs who kidnap kids who don’t eat their veggies, the aswangs that creep on the roof looking for their latest victim, preferably those fond of eating cheese curls, roam and fly around his room. The man on the moon who eat the brains of children who don’t want to take baths and the gremlins who rip the flesh of those who lie, steal, those who are greedy, and those who stay up late…
Cold sweat forms on his brows. He starts to shiver. He hears the laughter, the wailing and growls of the critters who are threatening to kill him…
He closes his eyes, but he cannot force himself to sleep.
“They’re here!”
The sharp fangs, the long and sharp claws- approaching. He feels their presence- coming closer and closer. Closer and closer. His whole body is drenched with sweat. The red flaming eyes, the long tongues, the ooze dripping from their deformed mouths- The pain rushes from his abdomen to his neck choking him. His head begins to swirl. The laughter, the screaming- the torment! He can feel them clawing his sheets. They’re here! They’re here! His heartbeat thumps loudly, ready to explode at any moment… THEY’RE HERE!
“MOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! HELLLLLLLPPP MEEEE!”
The door opens and the light switched on. Mommy.
She approaches him and feels his bed. She touches the sheets.
The crack of the belt against his skin is sharp:
it leaves welts and scars.

“I am scared,” he tells himself while walking home from school. In his mind, thoughts clash against each other: he wants to go home, watch TV and eat but he is afraid of passing through the alley: the only way home.
He is fat, small, slow and weak. Hesitation lies in each of his heavy steps burdened by his intense fear and his huge, bulky backpack which tire his round body and makes him slower. With each step he hears the teasing, the laughter and the taunting.
“PORKY!” Angel said.
“BABOY!” Mark shouts.
“BABOY!!”
“OINK, OINK TABA!!”
“BABOY BABOY BABOY!!!!!”
“FATTY!”
“FATSO!”
“BABOY BABOY BABOY!!!!!”
“TABABOY!!!”
With the hustle and bustle of the passing cars and the honking of the puto peddler’s horn- with the shouts of the vendors hawking their goods in the sidewalk stalls: each voice scream shout laughter whisper sound noise mock him.
All the world’s fingers point at him and in unison they exclaim the dreaded word:
BABOY!
He walks on. His heart beats fast inside his fat chest.
He bears the discomfort and torment of the images that soar through his mind: the bigger and stronger kids. He sees himself standing in the middle of a circle small, weak and overshadowed by the towering children that surround him. He shakes in fear as he sees their menacing grins. He shakes in fear and feels the fists falling on his nape, the blunt force of kicks landing on his butt, the choke holds, the pinches- with each heartbeat he feels the harsh words, the wedgies, the pulling down of shorts, the chasing after them who run off with his bag or his shoes. He walks on. Fat, drenched in sweat, slow. With his tiny steps he reaches the feared place.
The place he is now is just a few meters away from his house.
“If I run fast, the kids will not notice me.” He takes a deep breathe and run he did with all his might fast lightning fast strides which are impossible for his weight I must get home quick quick faster and faster starting to lose breathe but must run his house getting nearer and nearer he will make it he will he tells himself a few more steps a few more steps a few more
“Pssst! Come here fatso!”
He is standing in the middle of a circle of large kids shaking.
“You look so scared Piggy! Hahahahahahaha!”
